I was digging through the trash outside of the church

Lower than I've ever been, I'd never been worse

When he walked around the corner with a Styrofoam container

Said, "Hey. I got this here for you. "

Asked me where home was

I just looked him in the eye

He said, "Get on in the truck. Don't worry. It's all right"

Took me home, introduced me to his wife

She said, "Fine. You can stay the night. "

Figured it'd just be a couple days

We're coming up on five years this May

We've been hunting, we've been fishing

He's been teaching me things

Reckon you can say he really took me under his wing

Hell, I'm with him everywhere he goes

Gave me a job picking up sticks and digging holes

Made me a part of his family, man, I love his kids

Even think I'm in some pictures hung up on the fridge

Yeah, he saved my life

And if there's one thing I've learned since then

Is that a good old country boy is a dog's best friend

A couple blue-collar boys

Boy, we're thick as thieves

Anyone messes with him, they're barking up the wrong tree

They're gonna find out real quick

he's got a dog in the fight

And they're gonna have to deal with it

Oh, we got each other's backs that way

It's like this unspoken pact we made

'Cause we've been hunting, we've been fishing

He's been teaching me things

Reckon you can say he really took me under his wing

Hell, I'm with him everywhere he goes

Gave me a job picking up sticks and digging holes

Made me a part of his family, man, I love his kids

Even think I'm in some pictures hung up on the fridge

Yeah, he saved my life

And if there's one thing I've learned since then

Is that a good old country boy is a dog's best friend

'Til the end

And he tells me all the time

That I'm his

I sure hope he knows he's mine

'Cause we've been hunting, we've been fishing

He's been teaching me things

Reckon you can say he really took me under his wing

Hell, I'm with him everywhere he goes

Gave me a job picking up sticks and digging holes

Made me a part of his family, man, I love his kids

Even think I'm in some pictures hung up on the fridge

Yeah, he saved my life

And if there's one thing I've learned since then

Is that a good old country boy is a dog's best friend
