He'd give you his last cold beer
or a shirt right off his back
He could barely get on that John Deere
but he'd cut his neighbor's grass
He's the first one there on Sunday 3, 000 weekends straight
But even when he didn't have much money
he never just passed that offering plate
And this crazy world we're living in
could sure use a whole lot more like him

And they say never meet your
heroes it'll only break your heart
Once you peek behind that curtain
they ain't who you think they are
Might be some words of wisdom but it ain't true every time
Whoever said never meet your heroes ain't ever met mine

There ain't no statue in his honor
and the world don't know his name
But his wife can say he never raised
his voice after 60 years and change
His word was like a sunrise you could always count on it
Never said he saved lives in World War II
but his buddies all say he did

They say never meet your heroes
'cause it'll only break your heart
Once you peek behind that curtain
they ain't who you hope they are
Might be some words of wisdom but it ain't true every time
Whoever said never meet your heroes ain't ever met mine
Ain't ever met mine

He made hard times look easy and big problems seem so small
Hell, I could have called him Superman
but I just called him my grandpa

And they say never meet your heroes
'cause it'll only break your heart
Once you peek behind that curtain
they ain't who you hope they are
There might be some words of wisdom
but they ain't true every time
Whoever said never meet your heroes ain't ever met mine
No, they ain't ever met mine
